AAS is the right choice if you are in Singapore and not in a rush. S$20, in person at any AAS branch, picked up the same day, 1-year validity. For Singapore residents with time on their side, that is genuinely cheaper than what we offer.
We are the right choice when speed or location matters. $49 USD for the digital signed PDF in 5–10 minutes (anywhere in the world), or $99 USD for the digital plus a printed booklet shipped via DHL Express. Up to 3 years of validity. Useful if you are already in Bangkok and realised at the rental desk that you needed an IDP, or if you travel often enough that the 3-year option saves you the AAS queue every year.
Both produce a 1949 Geneva IDP. The booklet you receive from us is identical in format to the one AAS hands you. Recognition at rental desks is the same. The difference is delivery, validity, and where in the world you can buy it.
Popular destinations from Singapore
We're upfront about which countries actually need an IDP from you and which don't. The honest version, not the upsell version.
Mutual licence recognition under the ASEAN Driving Licence Agreement. Your Singapore licence is enough — no IDP required for car or scooter rental in Malaysia.
Officially covered by the ASEAN agreement, but rental agencies and tourist police still prefer to see an IDP — especially for scooter rentals in Phuket, Chiang Mai and Koh Samui.
Bali rental shops universally check for an IDP — at Avis/Sixt/Hertz at Denpasar airport, and at every scooter shop in Kuta, Ubud and Canggu. Without one you risk a 250,000 IDR fine and voided travel insurance.
Singapore licences are accepted directly for visits under 3 months. Most rental companies still ask for an IDP because their procedure is foreign-passport-driven. Bring it for peace of mind.
Same as Australia — your Singapore licence works alone, but Hertz/Avis/Apex desks at Auckland and Christchurch routinely request an IDP.
Post-Brexit, Singapore drivers should carry an IDP for car rentals across the UK.
Italian rental agencies (Hertz, Avis, Sixt, Maggiore) systematically check non-EU IDPs. Polizia Stradale also checks during summer stops.
Required at every major rental chain in Madrid, Barcelona and Málaga.
Important: Japan accepts only government-issued 1949 IDPs from your home country. Singapore drivers should use the AAS IDP for Japan, not Official IDP.
How a Singapore licence is received abroad.
Singapore licences are well-received globally. At Hertz Phuket, Sixt Sydney and Avis Auckland, agents recognise the bilingual SG card and rarely give Singapore drivers the secondary checks that US or UK passport holders sometimes get. The IDP is more about insurance than refusal — a road accident in Bali or Phuket without an IDP voids most travel insurance policies, and a hospital bill in Thailand can erase the savings on a no-IDP rental in seconds.
ASEAN exception: Singapore drivers do not need an IDP for Malaysia, Thailand, Brunei, Indonesia or other ASEAN states under the ASEAN Driving Licence Agreement. In practice though, Bali rental shops still check, Thai tourist police still ask, and a printed UN-format booklet shortcuts the entire conversation.
Outside ASEAN — Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Korea, Europe, North America — an IDP is expected. The cost is small change next to a missed road trip on the first day in Italy or Spain.
