What exactly is an International Driving Permit?

An IDP is a translation of your national driving licence into 12 languages, in the format defined by the UN road traffic conventions of 1949 and 1968. It must be carried alongside your original licence.

Is Official IDP a government body?

No. Official IDP is a private, independent translation agency. We translate your existing national licence. We do not issue government documents. The translation is widely recognised by rental fleets and authorities, but you must carry your original licence at all times.

Do I really need one?

Most car rental companies and traffic authorities outside your home country will ask for an IDP translation. Without one you may be refused the rental or fined up to USD 500.

Digital translations are delivered within 5–10 minutes of approval. Printed booklets ship the same business day via DHL Express.

How long is it valid?

You can choose 1, 2 or 3 years of validity at checkout. The validity is printed on your booklet and the digital PDF.

Two things: (1) a signed PDF translation, emailed to you within 5–10 minutes of approval, and (2) an optional printed booklet (16 pages, 12 languages, format defined by the 1949 UN convention) shipped by DHL Express. Both contain the same translated information.

Do you provide a plastic IDP card?

No, and on purpose. Plastic IDP cards are not recognised by any traffic authority, embassy or major car-rental company. Several websites sell them anyway; the buyer often finds out at the rental desk. The only IDP formats accepted internationally are the printed booklet and the signed PDF, which is what we provide.
