International Driving Permit for Thailand

Thailand recognises the 1949 Geneva IDP and routinely checks tourists. Especially needed if you plan to rent a scooter or car in Phuket, Chiang Mai or Koh Samui.

Real-world experience

What actually happens at the rental desk in Thailand.

Phuket and Chiang Mai have permanent tourist-police checkpoints near the popular roads. They specifically check for IDPs on scooter renters — and a scooter accident without an IDP voids your travel insurance, which is a much bigger risk than the fine.

Major rental agencies (Hertz, Avis, Sixt, Thai Rent A Car) require an IDP at the desk. Smaller scooter shops in Krabi, Koh Phangan and Pai often do not check, but if anything happens on the road, the absence of an IDP becomes the rental shop's problem and yours.

Bangkok city centre is heavy traffic and dual-language signage in Thai/English. Outside Bangkok, signage thins out and English is rarer. The IDP's 12-language translation is useful at police stops, especially in Isan and the deep south.

About this destination

Thailand is a signatory to the 1949 Geneva Convention and accepts the IDP format alongside your original licence. The same Official IDP booklet works for cars, motorbikes and scooters as long as the corresponding category is on your home licence.

Drive on the left in Thailand. Tourist police actively stop foreign drivers — particularly scooter renters in Phuket, Pattaya, Koh Samui and Chiang Mai. The fine without an IDP is small, but the bribe-or-fine ambiguity at roadside checks is something you will want to avoid.

Common questions about Thailand

For car rentals at major agencies, yes. For scooter rentals from small shops, often no — but tourist police checkpoints will fine you, and your travel insurance is invalid without it. The €99 cost protects against a $5,000 medical bill.
